Russians are proud of their country

In 2014 after Crimea been attached and the tension between Russia and the Western countries has grown, we are evidencing the upsurge in patriotic moods in Russian citizens, translating into support of policies pursued by the Russian president and the government (see also our previous issues). We were looking for the answer to the following question: if we disregard political conjuncture, then which feelings the citizens of the Russian Federation have towards their country.

The Independent Research Company of Bashkirova and partners ran an all-Russia study early this August to wonder whether our people were feeling pride in Russia.

The overwhelming majority of our people show their pride in their country. 82% of respondents have given a positive answer. Only 9% of interviewees said “no”. The same percentage of participants has found it difficult to respond.

Based on the data generated by our survey we’d rather state that patriotic feelings are dominating amongst our people no matter what their age, gender and background is.

We can note that the greatest percentage of patriots has been revealed in the Southern Federal district (93%) where the memory of the old Kazak traditions is still powerful. The residents of the Privolzhsky and the Far East Federal districts have appeared the least patriotic. These are the regions where unresolved social and economic issues are especially impactful.  According to the interviews outcomes we acquired at the end of 2013 and early 2014, people of these regions are the least happy with their living standards, democratic institutions performance and the nation development track, if compared to the rest of the Russian population.

Out of all the respondents, the least percentage of nationally proud people have been found in the category of those who disagree with the way of foreign policy pursued by the Russian president (in total 45%). Amongst those respondents, believing the Russian channels don’t provide truthful coverage on domestic and international developments we still find 70% of those who are proud of their country (which is by 12 p.p.* less than the mean).

This study was conducted at the beginning of August 2014 based on all-Russia random route sample (18+) by means of face-to-face interviews in place of residence. Altogether 1500 respondents in 8 federal districts, 150 settlements, 200 sample points have been surveyed. The sample error makes up 2,5%.
