Deterioration of Russia-West commercial and economic relations

The situation we are having in Ukraine today has lead to the heaviest geopolitical crisis. It is still unpredictable how the conflict around the self-styled republics is going to resolve. However there will be not only changes about the Russia-Ukraine relations, but it will also have a strong impact on the relationship between Russia and the Western countries. In light of the expected worsening of the commercial and economic relationships between the West and Russia, the Independent Research Agency of Bashkirova and partners has run a study which is to discover, which aftermath, Russians think, of this trade relations aggravation could be.

The developments unfolding in Ukraine put Russia into the state of facing a step-by-step hardening “sanctions” even to the extent of “isolation” of this country on the part of the West: the trade embargo, freezing accounts and assets, even those of the Bank of Russia and the Russian Government; freezing all the financial operations, disconnection Russia from the SWIFT and Visa/MasterCard international payment systems. On the other hand Russia is being granted a unique chance to come to alter its geopolitical and economical positioning in this world. This undertaking can be triggered by the potential limited consumption of the Russian gas by Europe and its transition to its own economy development strategy.

Our compatriots’ expectations in terms of Russia’s refocusing to the East have actual pre-conditions and grounds. Trade and business relationships with China are picking up steam very fast, and after the recent conclusion the gas deal with China, it is quite evident, that our country’s turn in the Eastern direction might make a long-term project. The attempts of the West to frighten Russia through economic and political sanctions are pushing the Russian authorities towards geopolitical import substitution measures.

This study was conducted at the end of August 2014 based on all-Russia random route sample (18+) by means of face-to-face interviews in place of residence. Altogether 1500 respondents in 8 federal districts, 150 settlements, 200 sample points have been surveyed. The sample error makes up 2,5%.
