Current internal and external threats to Russia's security

The issue of actual threats always occupies an important place in any country’s policy. The independent research agency “Bashkirova & Partners” decided to find out what external and internal threats to Russia exist in 2020-2021 according to experts.

The study took place in January 2020. Surveys were conducted among two main groups of experts (analysts and representatives of the executive branch) in the field of economic development and international relations. A total of 50 respondents were interviewed.

Assessing internal and external threats to Russian security, the leading positions, according to experts, are occupied by economic problems, terrorism and internal security of Russia, NATO expansion and nuclear weapons, social environment and corruption.

The graph below shows the most pressing threats that, according to experts, require an immediate solution.

Terrorism is the most important problem in the 21st century, as the world still has not found an effective strategy to completely get rid of terrorism. In 2019, Russian special services managed to prevent 39 terrorist attacks. Despite the outlined positive dynamics, Russia's place in the ranking according to the Global Terrorism Index remains quite negative (in 2018 - 34th; in 2019 - 37th out of 138).

According to experts, ordinary citizens in Russia are not the main targets of terrorists. Most of the attacks are directed either against the police forces or against members of the government.

Corruption for Russia is not just a problem, but a huge disaster, according to experts. The uniqueness of this phenomenon lies in the fact that corruption manifests itself mainly  as a petty corruption at lower levels of public authorities. Experts note that penalties are being tightened in the country, but, unfortunately, nothing has changed. According to the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), Russia scored 28 points out of 100 in 2019, climbing one position higher than in 2018 at 137th place out of 180.

In addition to the above mentioned threats, the experts most often referred to economic problems, the United States and NATO, as well as the problems of the population in Russia.
